Rigging and Equipment

Baja Anglers fishing days include top-quality light tackle — Shimano reels and Loomis rods on board, plus custom lures. Bluewater fly rods (10 wt–14 wt) with Abel or Loomis reels are available for daily rental when you need the right stick for big fish.

We use high-quality light-tackle and fly lines, leaders, and Grant-designed flies that replicate local bait — the same patterns behind many records. Tie at home in 2/0–6/0 if you like; a captain’s box of proven flies rides on every boat.

Fishing rods and reels

Some light-tackle lures are custom designed. Lure usage is included; lost lures are charged.

Having the correct tackle is always important, and critical when you battle large bluewater predators. A 50 lb yellowfin tuna can generate thrust equal to roughly 8 horsepower.

Fly lines

We use high-quality 12 lb–30 lb light-tackle lines and intermediate and deep-sinking lines on our fly reels. Proper lines and backing are available in-store.

You can bring your own leaders, but the most suitable leaders are also available in-store. If you are targeting world records, we carry tippet material that meets IGFA requirements across kilogram classes.

Flies

The flies are designed by Grant Hartman and specifically replicate local live bait. Most of the world records were caught on Grant’s flies.

A full selection of proven flies is available, and a captain’s box of top patterns will be on board your boat. Used flies are charged. If you tie at home, patterns imitate sardines, herring, mackerel, and similar bait in sizes 2/0–6/0.

Recommended clothing

Clothing should let you layer down through the day. Mornings are often cool, and rain/splash gear can improve comfort.

Polarized sunglasses are essential. We offer quality options in-store, and hats are available if you do not bring one.

Live bait

Plan on purchasing live bait or chum each fishing day to help assure the level of action you want.

Your captain can dial in the right bait program for offshore teasers, inshore prowling, or mixed days — ask in the shop when you check in.
